Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still significantly increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
